Marie Hortance Skain

Marie Hortance Skain, 99, of Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Heisinger Bluffs West Senior Living Community.

She was born February 9, 1925, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ves Emil and Lunette (Gagnepain) Pouyer. 

A 1942 graduate of St. Vincent’s High School in Perryville, Missouri, Marie attended Le Clerc College in Belleville, Illinois and received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science Degrees from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

She was united in marriage to Dr. Richard Skain at the Church of the Assumption in Perryville on June 9, 1951. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1973. 

From 1946-1951, Marie was a bacteriologist with the Missouri Division of Health Laboratory in Jefferson City. She was co-owner and operator of the Westphalia Inn, Hotel and Restaurant in Westphalia from 1965-1970.

Marie was an active and committed volunteer in her church and community. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she served on the Parish Council, St. Ann’s Sodality, Church Circle and on the E-Prayer Line, past president of the Jefferson City Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, member of the Glennon Circle #322 and past State Regent of the Daughters of Isabella, Guadalupe Circle, Lady-Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and the Ladies of Charity, Perryville, Missouri. She was past president of the Jefferson City Council of Clubs, and past member of the Missouri River Home Health Agency, Homemaker Health Care, and the Helias Foundation. Cole County Court appointed her to reorganize the Dental, Eye and Shoe Board, and she served on the Advisory Committee for Nursing Education at Lincoln University. She was a member of the Cole County Historical Society and a lifetime member of the Perry County Historical Society. In 1976, Marie was elected as the alternate delegate for the National Democratic Convention in New York.

Survivors include two children, James (Martha) Skain, and Cari Skain, both of Jefferson City; a granddaughter, Jessie C. (John) Quick; and a great-grandson, Archer J. Quick.

Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Michael F. Quinn officiating.

Burial will be in Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Helias Foundation, or to Immaculate Conception Endowment Fund, Inc.
