Cheryl Ann Rencher

July 26, 1946 ~ April 1, 2022
Affectionately known as “shorty” to some, Cheryl graduated from Jefferson City High School in 1964, and Lincoln University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science and Psychology and in 1975 with a Masters in Education. She served as Director of Personnel and Affirmative Action Officer at Lincoln University; as well as Director of Placement before retiring from the University. Cheryl continued to work at Sears in Jefferson City until the store’s closure.
She had a thirst for knowledge which she shared with her children, always insisting that they “enunciate” when they spoke. Cheryl developed a fascination for Jefferson City history, specifically the history of the African American neighborhoods and the elders who lived there. She was a bright and shining light who never met a stranger and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Cheryl met with members of her high school graduating class every month until the COVID restrictions limited her interaction. She spent much of her retirement traveling, spending time on “the boat,” enjoying 4 hour lunches/dinners with her friends and taking cruises. Cheryl was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, incorporated and a member of the Lincoln University Alumni Association.
Cheryl was preceded in death by her grandparents, Elmore and Ardell Turner; mother, Gladys Camper; father, Thomas Washington; sister, Beverly Sue Washington; and brother, Donald McNeil Camper, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memory three children; John Rencher, Jr. (Tracy), Jacci Brown (Chris), Joel Rencher (Amanda); grandchildren; Kerwin, John F., William, Joshua, Jorden, Jacob, Jaylen, and Jace; great-grandchildren; Lyrik, Janiya, Lawren, Javen, Karter, Khy, Journee, and Leianna; brother, Ronald Washington (Nina); Sisters Sandra Washington-Durst, Roslyn Washington and Donna Washington, and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and close and trusted friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9, 2022 at the Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, 3210 N. Ten Mile Dr., Jefferson City followed by a service conducted by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Funeral services will begin at Noon with Reverend W.T. Edmonson Sr. and Reverend Cornell C. Sudduth Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Longview Cemetery.

To the Rencher Family, I am saddened by the loss of Cheryl. We first met as 18 year old freshmen and were roommates at the University of Missouri, Columbia. We even shared the same birthday. Later, we transferred to Lincoln University, pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and remained life-long friends, often seeing each other during Homecoming each year. I will miss her sweet and beautiful smile. Thank God for wonderful memories and cherish them as a legacy to Cheryl. Bettie Johnson Walker St. Louis, Mo.
