James John Bax, 86, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2017, at Heisinger Bluffs.
He was born October 2, 1931, in St. Anthony, Missouri, the son of the late Al and Leona (Schepers) Bax.
James served with the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict and participated in the atomic bomb testing at Yucca Mountain in Nevada.
He was united in marriage on June 2, 1954 in St. Anthony, Missouri to Ruth Catherine Macke, who preceded him in death on September 20, 2016.
Retiring in 1991, he worked twenty-four years for the Missouri State Highway Department in the maintenance department. In earlier years, James worked as a farmer, carpenter, and made ice cream for Central Dairy.
James was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph where he served as a communion minister, usher, banquet volunteer and a charter member of Perpetual Adoration since 1986. He was also a proud member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #35 and a board member of the State Highway Credit Union.
A great cook and baker, James took pride in caring for his wife of sixty-two years. Family and faith were at the center of his life. He volunteered as a Eucharistic minister for Oak Tree Villas and Meals on Wheels. James had a good sense of humor and was a handyman for the neighborhood as well as his family. It was not uncommon for his children to find interesting wooden pieces he had made on their lawn on the morning of their birthdays.

Condolences to the Bax family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to your whole family. Psalms 147:3 says God, “heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds.” May God bring you comfort and peace.
I’m so very sorry for your loss Uncle Jim was a great man. I always admired him for the way he took care of your Mom. He always gave me some gooseberry jam whenever I’d got visit. And, he usually had something baked. I got the recipe for the St. Joseph sugar cookies from him. His memory will last a long time. I’m sure St. Joseph parish will miss him and all he did for them. I’ll be keeping you all in my prayers. Love, Cousin Judy
Pat and the entire Bax family: You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Jim was such a sweet devoted husband to Ruthie, and such a sweet man to visit with. He always had to tease me when I went over to AL that there was trouble coming, and no matter which unit on the care center I worked on he said, ” Things will surely be messed up now,” then a pat on the back and a laugh. I felt honored to care for him the short time he was in our care. I know he is reaping all the rewards in Heaven. I will be unable to attend his services due to a family hospitalization, but know I am thinking of you all.
I hadn’t heard of Mr. Bax’s passing until mass this morning. I’m terribly heartbroken but thankful that he is at peace and with Ruthie. I will forever cherish all the years he would come to rehab at St. Mary’s. He loved to give me a hard time and I loved to throw it right back. I carry his card in my purse everyday to remind me of what an amazing man he truly was. God Bless!
James and Ben can now hang out together. Dad is probably fishing or playing cards. He can’t watch baseball until next season.
