Vernon Leonard Motes, 72, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Ashland Healthcare. He was born on March 24, 1941, in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of the late Leony and Irene (Looney) Motes. He was united in marriage on July 18, 1985, in San Antonio, Texas, to Jeretta Lynn Malone who preceded him in death on July 30, 2007. Vernon served in the United States Air Force for 22 years. After his military career, he worked as a sales manager for McBride & Sons Homes Inc. in St. Louis. Survivors include: six children, Jamie (Eric) Wehnes, Jefferson City; Michelle (Joseph) Herring, Hutto, Texas; Kathryn Motes, St. Louis; Johnathan Motes, Jefferson City; Tyler Motes, Fulton; Kim Jeffrey, Encinitas, California; 5 grandchildren, Ethan McBaine, Haylee Herring, Corey Den Uijl, Christopher Den Uijl, Jasper Den Uijl; and five siblings, Richard (Elizabeth) Motes, Johney (Rosie) Motes, James (Brenda) Motes, Clarence (Gayle) Motes, and Judy (Billy) Whitworth. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a daughter, Monika Bell; a sister, Caroline Sue Motes; and four brothers, Fred, David, Wesley, and Mitchell Motes. Graveside services with military honors will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2013, at Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to the Ethan McBaine Education Fund or the Haylee Herring Education Fund in care of Mid-America Bank, 1511 Friendship Road, Jefferson City, Mo 65101.
