Curtis Dell Wyss, 89, of Russellville, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025, surrounded by family at home.
Curtis was born at the home of his parents, Herbert O. and Sylvia L. (Hodges) Wyss, on August 19, 1935, near Russellville, MO. He graduated high school from Cole County R-1 in 1953.
Curtis and Marsha (Thomas) were united in marriage on June 11, 1961, at the First Baptist Church in California, MO. Pastor Roy Martin, Marsha’s grandfather, performed the marriage ceremony. Marsha preceded him in death on March 15, 2025.
Curtis grew up helping his family on their farm even after getting married. Curtis was an electrician, home builder, and jack of all trades. His career led him to residential construction, and he worked at G&H Electric, Wyss Brothers Enterprises, Howerton Electric, co-owned Thomas Ceramic Supplies with his wife, and finished his career working for Russellville Locker and Feed. Curtis always said he never officially retired, he just quit working at age 80. He enjoyed teaching what he had learned throughout his construction career to family and friends.
Curtis was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Russellville while growing up and later joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Curtis filled many roles at Mt. Olive and most recently was a Trustee.
Curtis was known for playing his guitars and dobro, singing, and enjoying jam sessions. He loved playing so much that he taught family and church members how to play guitar. He was a member of the Mt. Olive Gospel Singers and the “Ole Tunes” musical group who visited and performed at numerous nursing homes for about 30 years. Most of all, he enjoyed playing instruments and singing with Marsha whenever they were together.
When asking the children about memories of their father, each said he worked a lot to provide for the family. Some of their fun memories included camping and fishing trips, roller skating, taking late night trips to the California Dairy Queen, stopping at the Cree Mee Drive-In when passing through Eldon, stopping at a gas station for soda and candy bar or peanuts, wiener roasts, playing cards and board games, and helping Marsha decorate for the grandchildren’s Valentine’s Day parties. Later in life, Curtis enjoyed giving his great-grandchild, Eli, rides on lawn mowers and tractors. Christmas was a special time for Curtis because he enjoyed decorating the house inside and out and picking out Christmas gifts for each of the children. When Curtis took time to relax, he enjoyed a cold glass of iced tea on the front porch and watching birds. He always had building and remodeling projects running through his mind and would even start the projects but would never quite get them finished. For all those who knew Curtis, he didn’t know how to cook, but he could make a mean grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup, or boiled potatoes with cottage cheese.
Curtis is survived by three children, Bradley Wyss (Sandra), Eric Wyss (Crystal), and DeAubra Windsor (James “Lee”) all of Russellville; seven grandchildren, Joshua Wyss (Whitney), Montrose, MN, Kayla Lute (Kyle), Jefferson City, Samantha Stegeman (Cory), Jefferson City, Logan Wyss (Kalie), Holts Summit, Courtney Oppermann, Springfield, Haley Bell (Joshua), Russellville, and Olivia Windsor, Jefferson City; and eight great-grandchildren, Naomi Wyss, Micah Wyss, Hudson Lute, Palmer Stegeman, Payton Stegeman, Emilia Wyss, Eli Bell, and Eliana Bell; siblings, Mary Schlupp, Jackie (Rick) Whitson, and William “Bill” (Sharon) Wyss.
Curtis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Melvin Wyss, Earl Wyss, Gerald “Butch” Wyss, and sister, Julie Wyss.
