Charles Edward Roll

Charles Edward “Charlie” Roll, 74, of California, Missouri, passed away Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Missouri University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

He was born March 21, 1952, in California, MO to William and Gertrude (Walterscheid) Roll, the youngest of 8 children. To many he was also known as “Roll-8.”

Charlie attended grade school at the Annunciation Catholic School and was a 1970 graduate of California High School and a 1972 graduate of Linn Technical College with an associate’s degree in drafting/surveying.

He was united in marriage on August 24, 1991, in California to Patricia Ann Hume Roll, who survives at the home.  They were soon to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary.

Charlie retired after 41 years with CenturyLink, initially (United Telephone Company) as the Missouri North Construction Supervisor.

He was a member of Annunciation Catholic Church where he served as past president of the parish council, was a lector, and led the rosary on Monday nights.  He enjoyed volunteering his time to the church picnic every year and calling Bingo.

He served his community as a former Alderman with the City of California, board member of the California Chamber of Commerce, past president of California Eagle’s #4027, past Grand Knight with the Annunciation Knights of Columbus #9271, past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly #582 Knights of Columbus, board member of Central Missouri Community Action representing Moniteau County, board member of California Progress Inc., committee member of MRED, and a past president of Heart of Missouri Pioneer Club, with the Telephone Company.  Charlie enjoyed serving as the chairman for over 21 years with the California Ham & Turkey Festival BBQ Contest.

Charlie participated with the California Democratic Club, Dancing with the Stars Contestant, and volunteered with the California Senior Nutrition Center and driver for the Oats Bus.

Charlie enjoyed hosting family BBQ’s, playing pitch, working outside in his yard mowing and gardening, attending area Parish Picnics, bringing smiles to all while riding his moped through town, and fishing trip adventures with Tiffany & Danny.  His favorite pastime was taking his wife Pat, along with brothers and sisters, on all day scenic road trips.

Other survivors include his daughter, Tiffany Roll (Danny) Bondurant, California, MO; bonus children, Cindy (Jim) Scheidt, California, MO; and Keith (Melanie) Schoby, Wichita Falls, TX.

Six grandchildren, Chesney Watts, Clinton (Patrick) Connell-Scheidt, Leslie Scheidt, Hope (Devin) Davis, Joseph (Carlie) Szymanski, Analyzia (Kaleb) Scott; four great-grandchildren, Carson Schoby Davis, Gabion Schoby Davis, Ellie Szymanski, and Jacob Henning.

Charlie is also survived by three siblings, Joyce Hees, California, MO; Judy Orscheln, Moberly, MO; and Barb Hanks, Lake Ozark, MO.  Along with brothers-in-law Larry (Theresa) Hume, Center, TX; and Melvin Hume, Southwest Venice, Florida; sister-in-law Donna Hume, Fort Worth, TX, and many nieces, nephews, and friends that claimed him as their own, “Uncle Charlie.”

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Schoby; siblings, Paul (Margie) Roll, Donald (Erma Dean) Roll, Harold Roll, Glenda Williams; and brothers-in-law, Vencil Hees, Donald Orscheln, and Mike Hume.  Also, two nieces, Debbie Roll and Paula Pugh; and great nephew, Mikey Broker.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Annunciation Catholic Church in California, MO, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Anthony J. Viviano officiating.  Burial will be in Annunciation Catholic Cemetery.  There will be a luncheon at the church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the California Nutrition Center or Annunciation Catholic Cemetery.
