Dorsey James Helton

Dorsey James Helton, 84, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at Americare Westbrook Terrace, in Jeferson City, Missouri.

He was born on May 18, 1942, in Dixon, Missouri, the son of Dorsey James Helton and Della Mae (Rollins) Helton.

Dorsey was a 1959 graduate of Dixon High School and went on to earn a degree from Lincoln University in 1979.

He was united in marriage to Mary Buschman on November 7, 1964, at Visitation Catholic Church in Vienna, Missouri.

Dorsey proudly served in the United States Navy, from September 1959 – May 1963, where he served in the Boat Division at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, and aboard the USS Skywatcher, a radar picket ship. He and Mary enjoyed many wonderful reunion trips as members of YAGRS, the radar picket ship association.

He worked as a postal clerk for the United States Post Office before joining the Missouri Department of Transportation, where he spent 36 years before retiring in June 2002.

Dorsey was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, and the Holy Name Society. He was a church volunteer helping as an usher, funeral lunch worker, and with mailings. He also volunteered with Friends of Amtrak.

He enjoyed making stained glass windows, stepping stones, fishing, working in the yard and garden, traveling with Mary, and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a kind, gentle, and friendly person who loved his family and was always there when they needed him.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Helton; two children, Jim (Ronda) Helton, St. Peters, and Sara (Doug) Farris, Eugene; and three grandchildren, Dalton Farris, Eugene; Jack Helton; and Emma Helton, both of St. Peters.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorsey, and Della Helton; his sisters, Thelma (Dorman) Baker, and Dorothy (Dean) Sooter.

Visitation will be 9:30 -11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Rev. Matthew J. Flatley.

Burial with military honors will follow in Resurrection Catholic Mausoleum.

Memorials are suggested for Masses, Immaculate Conception Capital Campaign, or to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
