I am most heartbroken by the passing of my dear friend, Pat. It was he who introduced me to the Seniors Physical Education Class at St. Charles Community College many years ago. From there we not only became friends, but he encouraged me to start a local Retired Old Men Eating Out (ROMEO’S) Group. That group still continues to this day in the Wentzville area. On my visit with him at the Mexico VA Home, we each shared a special smile, his a very proud Navy one, and mine, a very respectful Army one…Rest in Peace, My Friend!
Patrick Henry Coyne
September 9, 1933 ~ September 19, 2026
Patrick Henry Coyne, 93, of Jefferson City passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at the Missouri Veteran’s Home in Mexico, MO.
Born in Los Angeles, CA, Pat saw a good share of the world. While his service as a naval pilot fell between wars, he saw his own sort of action in flying S2F’s (stoofs) off the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown in the Pacific. The 1950s Grumman S2F anti-submarine tracker is a twin engined aircraft that weighed 23,485 pounds. Its torpedo bay housed depth charges or homing torpedoes and there were underwing hard points that held rockets. Pat’s job as a Navy pilot was to take off and hunt Soviet submarines, then come back and land this aircraft on the carrier in open seas. These feats earned him respect wherever he went, but especially at the Missouri Veterans Home where he spent his final days. In 1955, Pat received his BBA at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and later his MBA from Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, TX.
Later married and with two children, his career in the surgical supply field took him to New Jersey and then Texas. During the exciting early era of open-heart surgery in the 1960’s, he met and worked with the foremost surgeons of the day. After retirement, family took him to Missouri. He wasn’t from around here, but he embraced his time in Jefferson City. He moved to be near his daughter, Cara, but soon discovered a wonderful and loving companion in Carol Davidson. Carol became an integral part of the Coyne/Williams family; and Mr. Pat became an honorary Grandfather of the Mehmert family. They enjoyed traveling together to Europe and around the US. Pat’s ever-ready smile earned him many friends at the YMCA – and even a front-page write up in the February 2022 News Tribune supplement.
An enthusiastic Toastmasters International member for decades, he used his speaking skills to help numerous charities and was strongly involved in founding the College of Saint Thomas More, a private Catholic liberal arts college in Ft. Worth, TX. Pat was strong in his faith and served as an acolyte, initially at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Jefferson City and later at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Wardsville.
The family would like to acknowledge the great care and affection that the staff and residents at the Mexico VA home had for Patrick.
He is survived by his daughter, Cara Coyne Williams, son-in-law, John “Bear” Williams of Jefferson City; brother, Ronald Coyne (Sandra) of Burbank, California; and sister Eileen Coyne Mosler (Stanley) of New York; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Patrick Coyne; sister Leonore Coyne; and his second wife, Patsy Newhouse Coyne.
Visitation will be Friday, September 25, 2026 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church beginning at 9:30 a.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with Reverend Monsignor David Cox and Revend Monsignor Robert A. Kurwicki officiating. Entombment will be in the mausoleum in St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Missouri Veteran’s Home, 1 Veterans Drive, Mexico, MO 65265.
