William Joseph “Bill” Williams, 65, of Wardsville, passed away Friday, October 16, 2026, at Capital Region Medical Center.

Bill was born May 20, 1961, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the son of the late Leo and Mary Lou (Schaefer) Williams. He graduated from Helias High School in 1979 and completed his bachelor’s degree in agriculture at Lincoln University in 1986.

On June 7, 1986, he married Lanie Stegeman at Immaculate Conception Church in Jefferson City.

Bill spent his working life in food sales industry. He got his start at Schulte’s IGA while in high school and from there he became the produce manager at a grocery store in California. He went on to Menu Maker, where he served as Director of Sales before returning to sales, and later joined Kohl’s Wholesale retiring on May 1, 2026.

Bill was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville. After high school, he helped coach and manage the PAL football league, giving local kids a place to learn and love the game.

Bill was happiest outdoors, with a fishing pole in hand or out in the woods during hunting season. College and high school football was his favorite sport while Christmas was his favorite holiday. He enjoyed traveling, making many trips to Florida to watch the Cardinals at spring training. Above all, he was devoted family man. He was all about “US” (family), making sure his family was taken care of and his grandkids got whatever they wanted. Nothing meant more to him than time with his boys and grandchildren, and he was proud of every one of them, and they affectionately called him PaPa. He was a quite humble man that loved the simple things in life and to date treasured many childhood friendships.

  1. Sending many prayers to all of Bill’s family. I was so saddened to hear of him passing. I know he was so excited for retirement and being able to spend more time with his grandkids and boys. He was such a proud dad and grandpa and even more a husband. He always spoke nothing but true joy talking and telling stories about fishing trips and weekends spent with his family. He was truly one of the nicest men I have ever been lucky enough to know. He was my salesman for the last 12-13 years, but was so much more than a salesman. He took pride in what he did and was always there to help or lend a helping hand. I have made jokes for years that he was the 3rd arm I never knew I had or needed. Many times reminding me of big orders I had annually and needed to place my special orders to get delivery on time or questioning if I needed something he knew I had spoke about weeks prior to about pricing. He was by far the best and will be missed terribly by all. He was a gentle giant that put smiles on everyone’s face each and every time he stopped in to drop something off or just to say hi. There was only one thing I said he ever forgot and that was I was not a morning person like him. He would send me messages or call before 8 and he did learn I most likely would not respond till at least 9. Will continue to pray for you all In The weeks to come as I can not imagine the hole that has been left in your hearts and family. He was a rare legend in the food service industry and has left a lasting impact and expectations that will be so hard to find.
