Herbert Gerhard Sturm, 79, of St. Martins died Thursday, November 20, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born July 29, 1935, in Jefferson City, the son of the late Gerhard Julian and Hilda Amelia (Kramp) Sturm. Herbert served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He was united in marriage on April 14, 1956, in Belle, Missouri to Alma Louise Laney who survives. Herbert worked for the United States Postal Service as a clerk and supervisor of customer services from 1963-1998. He also had worked for Jefferson City Diesel, was a Transport Delivery Company truck driver, and worked for Fabick & Company. He was a faithful and active member of St. Martin Catholic Church and St. Martin Catholic School including the St. Martin Parish Council, Worship and Spiritual Life member, Home and School Association and 50 Plus Club. He was a charter member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council #7194 and member and past Faithful Navigator of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus St. Jude Assembly #1567. He also was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagle's Aerie 2693, Marine Corps League Central Missouri Detachment, former President and board member of the Jefferson City Federal Employees Credit Union, and was a volunteer for the Samaritan Center. Herbert enjoyed listening and playing music including be a member of the Country Royals Band, raising cattle, card playing, watching old western movies, and traveling. Other survivors include: six children, Fr. Samuel Sturm, Dayton, TN; Susan (Rick) Jordan, Liberty, Mo; Sharon Barnett-Kloud (Larry Kloud), Lakewood, Co; Stephen (Carol) Sturm, Hendersonville, TN; Stacey (Angie) Sturm, Jefferson City; Stuart "Toby" Sturm (Libby Drennen), Raymore, Mo; 14 grandchildren; and two sisters, H. Lucille Sturm, St. Louis; and Lillian Brune, Cedar Hill, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, David E. Barnett; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Brune. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2014, at St. Martin Catholic Church in St. Martins with the Rev. Edwin A. Schmidt officiating. Entombment with military honors will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Visitation will be 2:30-6 p.m. Sunday at St. Martin Catholic Church with a prayer service at 2 p.m. Memorials are suggested to St. Martin Church Expansion Fund, 7148 St. Martins Blvd., Jefferson City, Mo 65109; or to Preferred Hospice of Columbia, 1900 North Providence Road, Suite 311, Columbia, Mo 65202. I recall when we were around the Sturm family Herb always had me smiling and hanging on to every word of a conversation or story he would tell. He was a true “gem” of a man in so many regards and will be missed. Sorry for your loss and God bless.

  21. Dear Sturm Family, So sorry to hear about your sweet, always smiling Dad! I just saw him in October when we were home because of Kelsey’s funeral. He was still the same “Herbie” who always knew what to say and always asked what was happening to me or my family when we were home for weddings, etc. He was a very dear friend whom I will never forget! I am sorry that I was not able to be at his Memorial Mass. My daughter is undergoing medical treatment and I could not leave her. Prayers go out to Alma and the entire Sturm Family.
