James Ellroy Hale

It is with a mix of sadness and a reminder that life is a wild ride that we announce the passing of Jim Hale, a proud father, a devoted husband to Becky, and a fun-loving grandfather. A passionate trucker and skilled heavy equipment operator, Jim peacefully rolled out of this world into God’s arms on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

James Ellroy Hale was born on April 17, 1945, at his maternal grandparents’ home in Henley, MO. He was the beloved second son of Aubrey (Bud) and Virginia (Steenburgen) Hale. His childhood was filled with family, fun, and a fair bit of mischief, laying the groundwork for a life brimming with adventure and humor.

On October 16, 1964, Jim married the love of his life, Rebecca Harrison-Winters, in Eugene, MO. Their union was blessed with six wonderful children: Gayla (Richard) Owens of Jefferson City, Vickie (Ed) Honse of Hartsburg, Ruth (Bernie) Smith of Henley, Jennifer (Mark) Bax of Henley, Michael (Beth) Hale of Henley, and Daniel (Melinda) Hale of St. Anthony. Jim’s devotion to his family was unwavering, and he was a constant source of strength and support for his loved ones.

Jim is survived by 17 adoring grandchildren: Elaine (Brad), Betsy (Matt), Katie (Matt), Haley (Dustin), Alex (Crystal), Abby, Beth, Becca, Carson, Grant (Megan), Hannah, Emilie (Clayton), Logan, Nicholas, Cassie (Mike), Tyler and Miranda. He also leaves behind, so far, 18 cherished great-grandchildren whom he loved with all his heart. Jim’s legacy of love extends beyond his immediate family to include his surviving siblings: Art (Carole) Hale of Henley, Rebecca Kehr of Olean, and Vivian Watts of Eldon, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Preceding Jim in death were his parents, his infant son Ronald James Hale, grandson Adrian James Hale, brother Burl Hale, and his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Jim was a long-time member of Spring Valley Baptist Church and accepted Jesus into his heart as a young man. He attended school at Cole R-V, Eugene. He was a 20 year member of the Operating Engineers Local 513. Jim was an entrepreneur, owning and operating both an over-the-road trucking company and a land construction company. If you travel the major highways in Missouri, Jim probably had a hand in constructing it. His contributions to Missouri’s infrastructure were significant with his efforts extending beyond the highways to the Truman Dam, the Lee C Fine Airport at the Lake of the Ozarks, and clearing the hills and hollers for the Branson Airport.

Jim’s greatest joy came from his family who filled his life with laughter and a bit of chaos. He loved sharing his adventures with them, passing on wisdom, instilling good values, and reminding them that the best bait for fishing is a good story. His laughter, warmth, and generous spirit were like the open road—endless and inviting. His wife Becky and children were his support crew, providing him with endless love and patience.

Jim was a man of many talents and interests—never a dull moment in sight. He found joy in the open road as a trucker and was known for his expertise as a heavy equipment operator. His love for nature often led him to spend his free time fishing, hunting and driving the back roads, activities he found pleasure in throughout his life. With a personality bigger than a semi, Jim always had a story ready to entertain anyone within earshot. These are still retold today, especially when it involves bears and alligators.

Jim will be remembered for his hard work, his love for his family, his zest for life and a freezer full of popsicles for his grandchildren. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege to share in his remarkable journey.

Visitation will be Friday, June 13, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.at Hickory Hills Baptist Church. Visitation will continue Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Spring Valley Baptist Church.  Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. where stories of his adventures and love for his family will be shared—likely with some embellishments, just as Jim would have wanted.

Memorials may be directed to the family with donations going towards the great grandchildren’s education.
