Veda Voncile Courtney-Hunt, 86, was surrounded by loved ones as she peacefully departed her earthly home and was welcomed to her heavenly home on January 22, 2022.

Voncile was born May 6, 1935, in Piedmont, OK to the parents of Chester Edward Courtney and Jimi Ernestine Towe. Voncile graduated from Tahlequah High School and went on to graduate from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, OK. She was united in marriage on December 31, 1963 to Gary Benjamin Hunt from Tahlequah OK and later sealed together for time and all eternity in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ temple in Kailua, HI.

Voncile earned a degree in speech pathology and worked as a speech therapist in several schools. She continued her education to earn a master's degree at Lincoln University in Jefferson City MO. She spent a majority of her career employed by the state of Missouri’s Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Corrections. She then continued her career in speech pathology as a private consultant to local skilled nursing facilities before she finally retired.
Voncile later served a year-long mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City UT assisting interested patrons in family history research.

Voncile was preceded in death by her husband Gary, her sibling’s Jack Courtney, Bettie Defalco, Beatrice Mask, William Courtney, and Nancy Sims.

Voncile is survived by: 3 siblings- LuElla Townsend of Galena MO, Tommie Courtney of Ponca City OK, and Jonnie Williams of Tulsa OK; 6 children- Douglas Hunt (Sue) of Maui HI, Deborah Milligan of Maui HI, Ronald Hunt of Maui HI, Jackson Hunt of Forsyth MO, Cheryl Baker (Daniel) of Charleston MO, and Amber Myers (Tony) of Hamilton MO; 22 grandchildren- Rusty, Kyle, Will, Kalani, Christina, Kekoa, Amber, Danny, Monica, Jordan, Jerica, Jillian, Skylar, Courtney, Noah, Morgan, Benjamin, Caleb, Carson, Cole, Chloe, and Cate, and 20 great grandchildren.

Voncile found joy and fulfillment in her role as a wife, mother, grandmother, “gigi”, sister, and friend, as well as in family history, quilting, and the unconditional love she so freely gave in her service to all. Her legacy will live on in memory of those whose hearts she touched. She exemplified the Savior Jesus Christ through her Christlike love that came so natural to her. What a sweeter place this world would be if we could all so selflessly love as she did.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home, 3210 N. Ten Mile Dr., Jefferson City. Graveside services will immediately follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Guestbook

  1. Mom had a great love of family and shared love and friendship in a cheerful caring generous way to all who knew her. I want all the family to know that she loved all of us and cared for each of us dearly. Her love is eternal. I will always be grateful for her and the brilliant example she set for each of us to be kind and loving. She was busy with an active and full life and didn’t have time to be bored. She blessed all of our lives regardless if we knew it or not, just like our Father in Heaven works tirelessly to help and guide us. She surely is an elect of our God, now in heaven. Blessed be the generations before her and after her, I say in Jesus name, amen. Eldest daughter, Debra Elaine (Hunt) Milligan 66 years old.

  2. I admired my Aunt Voncil. She was a single mom, I do not remember many as I grew up. I thought her brave when she went to college and got a degree! She did remarry and have two more children and lived a God fearing life. I will always remember her sweetness, until we meet again in heaven! ❣

  3. My grandma was really my mama. She poured her heart and soul into helping my mother raise me. She taught me how to express unconditional love to others. There will never be another who could ever take her place. She showed loved, acceptance and kindness to all that she crossed paths with. I am so grateful for the love she gave me and my babies. It will live forever in our hearts. Courtney Wynter Brackins, granddaughter

  4. Sister Voncile Hunt was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was a privilege to work with her for many years as she served the Lord. She was dedicated to the church choir and was always so willing to serve in whatever way she could. Many wonderful memories of the time we shared in church service! She is a very special person who will go on serving through the eternities! John and I will be out of town on Saturday and will not be able to pay our respects to this fine lady!

  5. Many fond memories of our ‘Sisters’ get togethers over the years. Sending all our Love, Tom, Pat and family

  6. Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead and loving memories to forever hold in your hearts. Aunt Voncile will be missed.

  7. It is difficult to find the words to describe how I feel about my mother. She had a way of making me feel special and important. There was never a time when I wondered if she loved me. She let me know each and every day that I was loved. She always put my needs before her own. She supported me in every way, even when I made mistakes. She was my soft place when the world was unkind. She taught me the kind of mother that I should be. I know I will never be as selfless, as loving, as giving as she was, but I will continue to try because she was my hero and the best example of motherhood I knowߒ—

  8. My sweetest memories of grandma are that no matter how much trouble I would get in (and I got in A LOT of trouble) she always had my back. She took me in her home, she helped raise me, taught me how to cook and that the best ingredient is love, taught me “that bed better be made before you leave your room”, taught me it’s ok to cuss sometimes if you are angry enough and you don’t think anyone’s listening, she taught me that there’s no such thing as TOO much jewelry, she taught me to never cry over spilt ice cream (unless it’s in the back seat of her car, she taught me that farts don’t make a sound if YOU can’t hear it, she taught me that you ALWAYS forgive.…But the most important lesson she taught me is that love is unconditional, family is forever, and that serving others is the greatest reward you can give yourself.

  9. I loved Voncile with all my heart. I worked with her in Primary and visited with her often through the years. She was always a positive influence and I never heard her say a bad word, or a bad thing, about anyone. She was one of a kind. I will miss her forever.

  10. My dearest grandma. How wonderful, beautiful, sensitive and compassionate. Completely Selfless, Always putting everyone else before yourself. A Strong mother who worked hard, raised a beautiful family and educated herself all while putting everyone else first. She truly lived her life for others and the lord, she always had so much love to give. She will be missed dearly and I will be reminded by her love everyday.

  11. Prayers that loving memories forever bring comfort, much love and deepest sympathy, Carol & Lilly Session, Tracie & Dave Williams, Christen & Shawn

  12. A wonderful friend and colleague. She was a true educator who went beyond for her students. RIP Voncile. Prayers, Mary and Jim Henley.
