Cheryl June West

Cheryl June West, 71, of Jefferson City, was picked up by her long-time love, Gary, and ushered into glory on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family. Cheryl was the strongest person during her 12-year battle with cancer, but it was not the victor as she is now healthy, whole, and tap dancing in heaven.

She was born July 23, 1952, in St. Louis, Missouri to Virgle Emmett and Wanda June (Williams) Farris.

Cheryl was a 1970 graduate of Ritenour High School in St. Louis.

On July 11, 1970, Cheryl married the love of her life, Gary Keith West, at Fee Fee Baptist Church in St. Louis Missouri.   He preceded her in death on January 16, 2022. They celebrated 51 years of marriage in 2021.

Cheryl dedicated many years of her career to the Missouri Board of Probation and Parole, where she served as an account clerk. Additionally, she worked at the Russellville Meat Locker. However, Cheryl often said that her most cherished role was that of a loving mother and grandmother – a role in which she excelled.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior at nine years old and continuously demonstrated her faith in Christ into her adult life. A long-time member of Russellville Baptist Church, Cheryl actively participated in church activities. She shared her wisdom and kindness with others through teaching Sunday school and lending her voice to the church choir. Cheryl’s dedication was further evident as she volunteered for over two decades during Vacation Bible School and graciously served as the church custodian alongside her husband for all those years.

She shared her love of Christ and the church with her family and strived to have her children and grandchildren accept Christ as their Savior. A goal that was wonderfully met.

Cheryl’s generosity extended beyond the church walls. She also served as a group leader for World Changers Ministry, touching the lives of countless individuals through her guidance and support. Furthermore, as the crossing guard at Russellville Elementary School for many years, Cheryl ensured the safety of students with a warm smile and caring nature.

Known for her sociable nature, Cheryl was a true social butterfly. It was often said that she couldn’t go anywhere without seeing someone she knows. She possessed the rare ability to make friends effortlessly and leave a lasting impression on those she encountered.

Survivors include three children, Jennifer West, Scott (Shanna) West, Julie West, all of Jefferson City; five grandchildren, Sierra Call, Silas Call, Kaylee West, Matthew West, Lillian West; brother, Ron (Jeanna) Farris, Hazelwood; two sisters, Karen (Jim) O’Farrell, Russellville; Judy (Joe) Lee, Melbourne, FL; as well as several much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a niece, Susanne Farris.

Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Monday, February 5, 2024, at Russellville Baptist Church.  A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Rusty Kuhns officiating.

Burial will be in Enloe Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Russellville Baptist Church, or to the American Cancer Society.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To the family:
Cheryl was an amazing, loving, and faithful friend to those she knew. She was our “P&P greeter” for many years. She never knew a stranger and those who just met her left feeling like they knew her for years. I know she is in a better place with a new body and she is happily talking with her loved ones again. God will take care of us who mourn her death right now. Just remember all the good times with your mom and grandmother. She loved life and all of you with her whole heart and being just like she loved Jesus and our Heavenly Father! Go through life with that same kind of love, friends and 2nd family. Love and hugs to all of you from her sister from another mother!❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

  2. So sorry for your loss, she was a great very strong lady. God bless 🙏my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  3. Cheryl was a very sweet & loving woman. I met her when she was working as a crossing guard. I saw her & Gary out and she would update me on her fight through many years with cancer. She fought a great fight but now at rest. Last time I saw her was a few months ago at McAlisters. She still had that beautiful smile. May Cheryl rest in peace.

  4. ‘What A Friend We Have in Jesus’ is the tune of a little music box Cheryl gave me years ago. That describes Cheryl; “what a friend” and “Big Sis”, as I would call her. Could not ask for a sweeter or more loyal friend and co-worker.
I and my family have been truly blessed to have known her and your family.
Cheryl lived her life with joy! Shining the light of Jesus every day, even through her long health struggles. What an amazing testimony! Praise God, what joy she must be experiencing right now!!
My heartfelt thoughts and prayers for all of the family.
Julie, Jennifer and Scott…my heart breaks for your deep sorrow. May God Bless and Comfort you with His Peace and Love.

  5. Our deepest condolences. Cheryl was a joy and I’m so glad we met her. We had some great times at the cafeteria when visiting Siteman for treatments. Will never forget your mom’s smile and positive outlook. She will be missed.

  6. It’s difficult to picture a world without Mr. West and Miss Cheryl in it (I still feel weird calling him Gary). They were a dynamic duo!

I really enjoyed how her obituary was written. What a beautiful tribute.

I’m so sorry for the loss you’ve experienced. I’m here if you need me!

  7. So sorry for your loss
She always had a smile on her face every day at the P&P office, she will be missed🙏

  8. We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Wishing you peace during this difficult time. She was very strong.

  9. To the family of Cheryl I send my most heartfelt sympathy. I was not able to see you at time of service and think of you so much. We enjoyed working together and getting to work in the snow. God bless each of you.
