Edward Lynn Bode, 91, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2022, in Jefferson City.
Born May 30, 1930, Ed graduated from St. Peter High School in Jefferson City, then went on to earn a degree in Philosophy from Cardinal Glennon College in St. Louis.
In 1955, he was ordained a Catholic priest in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Rome, Italy. While a priest, he continued his academic pursuits, earning degrees in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome in 1956, in Journalism from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1956, in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome in 1968, and a Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas in Rome in 1968.
From 1958-1960, Ed served as the Editor of the Catholic Missourian. From 1960-63, he acted as a Chaplain at the University of Missouri and at Stephens and Christian Colleges in Columbia. From 1963 -1966, he ministered as pastor of St. Boniface parish in Brunswick, Missouri. From 1968-71, he taught theology classes at The Missouri School of Religion, St, Louis University and St. John’s University in Jamaica, New York. In 1972, Ed’s petition was granted, and he received a voluntary laicization by the Holy See.
On July 15, 1972, in University City, MO, Ed married Mary Ann Stoll. They had two children, Ann and John. They raised their family in Jefferson City. They were very involved members of St. Joseph Cathedral Parish where Ed served on the parish school board, the liturgy committee, and he was the Chairman of the parish Pro-Life Committee. Mary Ann passed away on June 30, 1999.
From 1971 until his retirement in 1993, Ed worked with the Missouri Department of Mental Health, but also continued in academia acting as an instructor or professor at Westminster College in Fulton, Stephens College in Columbia, Tarkio College in Jefferson City and State Fair Community College in Jefferson City.
In retirement, Ed founded and spearheaded the development of Eagle Knoll Golf Club in Hartsburg, which opened in 1996 and received national recognition. In the summer of 2000, he served as a volunteer in Rome for the Jubilee Year of the Church.
On December 30, 2000, in Jefferson City, MO, he married Jewell Rae Oidtman Lichius. Together they traveled and pursued a retirement project of cultivating Vidal Blanc and Vignole grapes at their Collinetta Vineyard, producing some of Central Missouri’s finest wine.
Throughout his later years, Ed enjoyed academic reading, participated in bible study, remained active in Pro-Life causes at St. Joseph Cathedral and extensively researched his family genealogy.
Survivors include his wife, Jewel Rae; his children Ann and Michael Monday, Omaha, Nebraska; John and Eileen Bode, Naples, Florida; his grandchildren Ben and Mary Sarah Monday and Jack and Will Bode; stepchildren and spouses Michael and Vicky Lichius, St. Louis and Julianna Lichius and Ryan Gloria, Albuquerque, New Mexico; step-grandchildren Brittany and her husband Michael Jones and Jesse Steele; and step-great-grandchild Levi Jones.
Visitation will be held 4-6 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2022, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. William L. Korte and Rev. Frederick J. Elskamp officiating.
Entombment will be in Resurrection Catholic Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Renovation of Cathedral Undercroft at 2305 W. Main Street or to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation at 2505 Mission Drive, both located in Jefferson City, MO 65109.

Ed was a wonderful man. I enjoyed my many conversations with him throughout the years and always found him to be intelligent and passionate but with a keen interest in the opinions of others. I’ll be out of town and unable to attend services but Ed’s family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
I first met Ed in August, 1973 when my parents bought the house next to the Bodes. Ed and my Father had many intellectual discussions and it seemed no matter the topic, Ed was extremely knowledgeable. However, when it came to home ownership, Ed would seek the advice from my Father, a self-taught craftsman who learned from trial/error & shared his expertise. What a wonderful time on Western Air Drive! I am once again a resident on this street and your presence will certainly will be missed. RIP Mr. Bode and thank you for all you taught so many of us while you were with us. Melinda Dolan Sanders

His guest-speaker presentations of family history at the annual Bode reunions were exceptional. Careful research and excitement about what he found were just two of his top-notch traits!
