Gregory Anthony Wankum, 92, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018, at Heisinger Bluffs.
He was born May 9, 1925, in Cole County, the son of the late Frank and Philomena (Bisges) Wankum.
A 1943 graduate of St. Peter High School, Greg received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from St. Louis University, majoring in Accounting.
He proudly served with the United States Army Air Corps, stateside, during World War II, as a B-24 Aircraft Commander.
He was united in marriage on February 19, 1949, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City to Doris Mae Wildhaber, who preceded him in death on August 8, 2017. They had celebrated 68 years of marriage.
He worked for Delongs, Inc. for thirty-one years, retiring as treasurer in 1987.
Greg was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he served in earlier years on the parish council and St. Peter Catholic Cemetery Association for 15 years, with 2 terms as president. He was a past board member of Helias High School; American Red Cross; United Way; and Sheltered Workshop. In addition, he was a member of the Optimist Club, particularly enjoying working with the Christmas tree lot for many years; American Legion Post 5; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 2693; and the Disabled American Veterans.
He loved to fish and be with his wife enjoying their cabin on the Gasconade River; camping; mushroom hunting, boating, woodworking; yard and garden work; and home and auto maintenance.
Survivors include a daughter, Geralyn Ann Wankum, Jefferson City; a son, Gregory Gerard Wankum, Jefferson City; a sister, Mildred (George) Coughlin, Centennial, Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Robert Wankum; Rudolph Wankum; Edward Wankum; a sister, Florence Wankum; and an infant sister, Theresa Wankum.
Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., Saturday, February 3, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m., February 3, 2018, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Csar Anicama officiating.
Entombment with military honors will be in Resurrection Mausoleum.
Memorials are suggested to Masses or a Charity of the Donors Choice.
