Joann Catherine Groner

joann groner

Joann Catherine (Thrash) Groner, 82, of Jefferson City, entered eternal life early Tuesday morning, July 26, 2022, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born to this life at St. Mary’s Hospital in Jefferson City on November 29, 1939, the oldest child of Harold Franklin and Lena (Maasen) Thrash.

Joann attended grade school at Immaculate Conception School and was always delighted to say she was part of the first graduating class of Helias High School in 1957.  She later attended Lincoln University and the University of Missouri in Columbia.

On August 18, 1962, she was united in marriage at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church to Richard Stephen Groner. She was a homemaker and devoted mother of five children, Cheryl (Jerry) Flickinger; Rev. Eric Groner, SVD; Laurie Groner; Yvonne Nelli; and Kurt Groner; seven grandchildren, Zachary Flickinger, Aubrey (Trevor) Frazier, Althea Honan, Eleanor Honan, Sophia Honan, Ryan Nelli, Rachel Nelli; a great-grandchild, Ryles Frazier; two sisters-in-law, Lee Thrash and Amy Thrash; two brothers-in-law, Bernard (Donna) Groner and Rev. John Groner; numerous nieces, nephews and 50 first cousins.

Before starting a family, Joann was a secretary in the Department of Education and the law firm of Rozier, Carson and Nacy. Later she worked for the Chancery in Diocese of Jefferson City in Family Life office.

As a proud life long member of Immaculate Conception Church, Joann’s volunteering included: a lector, the Perpetual Adoration Committee, member of Immaculata Club Memorare chapter, Vocations Committee, Mother Seton Group, Brownie and Cadet Girl School leader – receiving the St. Ann’s Medal (highest award on Catholic Committee of Girl Scouting) and the Parish Council.  She was a Jefferson City Council of Clubs Chaplain; member of Church Women United; President of Helias Pepettes; Helias Mothers’ Club; and president of St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, volunteering in their gift shop and at the ice cream socials. She enjoyed gardening and was master gardener. Music was always playing in the Groner household and she enjoyed attending the Jeff City Cantorum events.

She was preceded in death by her husband Richard on May 6, 2016; her parents; and two brothers, Bob and Don Thrash.

We are thankful for our beautiful mother who always had an encouraging word, an infectious laugh and smile. Our family of 7 would take yearly family vacations, she would sew school uniforms and would always be up for any shopping trip. She had many close family members and friends who she enjoyed spending time with them.  Some of her favorite things included: having coffee after church, sewing group, playing bridge and scrabble.  She adored hosting parties and celebrating the holidays with her family; many years we would decorate a 20’ Christmas tree.

She never knew a stranger and family gatherings always included friends.

“The loveliest masterpiece of the heart of God is the heart of a mother” we were blessed to have her as our mom and she will be terribly missed.

  4. I met Joann on a FAB builders’ trip many years ago. I had growing children and hers were out of the house. I remember visiting with her on the bus ride to one of the various excursions. We talked about summer with the children all home for the summer. I did child care in my home as well, so I had many children around all year, but especially in the summer when the older siblings of the little ones I watched would come to my house. I commented that I was so exhausted by summer’s end, and looked forward to the kids going back to school. She looked at me and said, “I loved summers and having the kids around all summer, and I cried when they went back to school.” I said, “Are you kidding? I don’t any mom with lots of kids who aren’t happy with school starting again.” She just smiled. I have never forgotten that. Since then I have met a few other moms who cried when their kids returned to school. I guess I had my hands full, with sometimes 14 kids at my house during the summer days. But that remark is one that will always be remembered. I loved that dear Joann. So easy to talk to. That first time I met her, we talked as if we had known each other for our whole lives. What a great lady! My sympathy to all the family! She will be greatly missed!!
