Lola Irene Rice
June 1, 1934 ~ October 30, 2021
Lola Irene Rice, 87, of Jefferson City, peacefully passed away Saturday, October 30, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born on June 1, 1934, to Cleve Robert and Clarica Faye (Manes) Hook, in Grandview Missouri, in the home of her grandparents, Daniel B. and Myrtle O. Henson Manes.
Lola attended schools in Frank, Dixon, Kansas City, Miller Park, in Omaha Nebraska during WWII and was a 1950 graduate of Chamois High School. Because she excelled in high school and had read every book in the library, the teacher let her graduate early at the age of 16. When she was fifty, Lola received her Child Development Associate Credentials from Lincoln University.
In October of 1953, Lola married Donald Lee Rice at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City. He preceded her in death on June 17, 2004.
As a homemaker raising five children, Lola later enjoyed working outside the home at various childcare facilities, selling Avon, and eventually was the office manager for a Jefferson City psychologist.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth J. “Tess” Trammell (Danny), Kansas City; and Patricia A. Schwartz (Don), Brazito; three sons, Paul D. Rice (Sandy), Sequin, Texas; Kevin L. Rice (Caroline), Jefferson City; and James B. Rice (Rayna), Jefferson City; ten grandchildren, Ashley N. Trammell, Kayla E. Vinson (Jeff), Katrina M. Carroll (Ryan), Shawna K.L. Schwartze, Leanna McCubbin (Devin), James Rice, Jeremy Rice, Kenna Rice, Weston Rice, and Natalie Rice; three siblings, Georgia M. Robb (Charles), Oklahoma; Carol E. Holt (Chuck), Arizona; and James R. Peek, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Joy Peek, Missouri.
She was preceded in death by her father, Cleve Robert Hook, her mother, Clarica Faye Manes Hook Peek Earhardt; her husband of fifty-three years, Donald; a sister Katherine Kaye Peek, a brother, Daniel William Peek and a “brother of the heart,” Ronald Aubrey McGee.
She loved making her home beautiful for her family, but the highlight of her days was always loving on her grandchildren.
In earlier years, she enjoyed her time with the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, and school library committees. She belonged to garden and book clubs, and a 1950’s little theater group in the old Carnegie Library. She loved family research, attending family gatherings, gardening, reading and she served as a teacher in a “Mother’s Morning Out” program. She was a floater substitute in several early learning/care centers in the city. With her husband, she enjoyed traveling in the USA and to Europe with the Trammell family.
Lola’s “Hello” was a quick hug and “Goodbye” was another quick hug and “Love Ya, Always and Forever!”
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m., Friday, November 5, 2021, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.

Tess, your mother sounds like she was a bright, loving lady just like you. ߘʢݤ️ My prayers and thoughts are with you, Danny and the girls. Susan Seacat
My deepest sympathy to the Elizabeth, Paul, Kevin, Pat and James. Your mom was a hoot!! I loved taking her out with my mom to the local plays, getting Ice Cream, going for a ride out to Binder Lake or just coming over and sitting a spell so they could drink tea and reminiscing on mom’s deck. Mom and Lola would start talking about something, next thing I knew they where laughing like school girls! She was such a good friend to mom especially helping look up mom’s ancestry. I was so glad we made it over there Wednesday to talk to her. See her precious smile, calling me her “Jenny June”. She said ” I will love you always and forever”. We said it back to her too. Lola and mom even then were reminiscing and smiling at each other. Lola was asking mom what puzzle she was working on and if the trees out back had started changing. I know my mom (Ruth) was so glad to be there with her too. Our family isn’t far away as long as we have our memories. To you my friends, my thoughts and prays. Hugs!!!!! With love, Jenny
My love and prayers to Lola’s family. I am so fortunate to have spent time with her just 2 weeks ago. We laughed and told stories.
Heartfelt sympathies. She is irreplaceable and will be missed by many. Fondly, Theresa Hook Barton (Clarence Hook’s daughter, Lola’s cousin)
Rice Family, Very honored to have known Lola. Such a sweet lady, always enjoyed visiting with her. Sincerest condolences to you all. Linda Marr and Joe Coy
Fond memories of Lola with Tess at the High Prairie cabin in Leavenworth. Lola was so in touch with God’s beautiful environment. She rode the golf cart across the farm and appreciated her blessings. Lola assisted in preparing food for the cabin gathering and meticulous in attention to detail in the food presentation. Honored to know Lola and be experienced by her love for people and life. Mary Rose & Bogey
Kevin and I were blessed to have Lola and Don as neighbors. Lola always had a smile for everyone. Our Condolences to the family. Kevin and Elaina Heislen
Sent with love and remembrance,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
I met Lola when she accompanied Tess to a gathering of friends. I enjoyed her wisdom, humor, and zest for life. God bless your soul Lola as you enter eternal rest. May fond memories bring peace to your family. Joanie Jones
Lola was such a loving sister. She had the knack of making other people feel special. She was always so truly interested in other people. She had an amazing mind–she could remember so many details about history, people, and places she had either visited or read about.
This quote from Beatrix Potter could certainly have been written by Lola as well.
Thanks to cousin Paula Manes Clay for sharing this.
Thank you , Jennifer, I know mom really enjoyed being with your mom too. She had a beautiful smile and loved taking care of her family.
