July 28, 1930 ~ February 10, 2025

Born in: Dodge, Nebraska
Resided in: Jefferson City, Missouri

Madalyn Ann Schnieders, 94, of Jefferson City, went home to her Lord on Monday, February 10, 2025, at Heisinger Bluffs surrounded by her family.

She was born July 28, 1930, in Dodge, Nebraska, the youngest child of Joseph and Magdalena (Liekhus) Dirkschneider.

She attended Sacred Heart Academy and graduated from Dodge High School in Dodge Nebraska.

She was united in marriage on October 8, 1951, to Edgar H. Schnieders for 37 years who preceded her in death on January 23, 1989. Together they lovingly raised eight children. She later married Charles E. Hooker who preceded her in death on September 5, 2010.

Madalyn and her husband, Edgar, owned and operated Edgar Schnieders Construction Co. from 1951-1985. She was an accomplished bookkeeper for the business. In 1985 they sold the family business to their eldest son, Jeffrey who continued to operate the business till his death in 2020. Today that business is owned by Madalyn’s oldest grandson, Justin Schnieders.

Madalyn loved her God and was a faithful disciple of Christ. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph where she participated with several parish associations and church ministries. She was active with Prison Ministry and REC in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Madalyn poured herself into her ministry of bringing others closer to Christ by volunteering with the Diocesan Marriage Encounter and the Cursillo Movement. She attended the first Women’s Cursillo retreat of the diocese in 1974.

Madalyn had a generous spirit whether it was to people close to her or those on the fringes; and she was sensitive to the needs of others. She opened her door and heart to people on the margins or displaced, including inmates from MSP, refugees from Vietnam and many others where she saw a need. To that end she was a founding member of the Agape House in Jefferson City, an Airbnb of sorts for those visiting their loved ones in local penitentiaries, and served as a board member from 1980 – 1995. She was also a Hospice House volunteer, St. Mary’s Health Center Auxiliary volunteer and member for many years. Her practice was to “give so as to make a real difference”.

Her faith and family were her top priorities. She witnessed her love of God and Jesus Christ both by her constancy and her example of engagement and volunteerism. For family she made sure that her house could accommodate every family event and holiday gathering. Summer vacations were always to places where family lived.

Madalyn enjoyed flower gardening and reading. She loved to travel and made it to such places as China, Europe, Ireland, Israel, Mexico and Alaska. She was quite a dancer, and she and Edgar were poetry in motion when they danced together.

Survivors include six children, Ron (Tammy) Schnieders, Jefferson City; Michael (Cindy) Schnieders, Jefferson City; Chris (Denise) Schnieders, Centertown; Lori (Pat) Concannon, Columbia; Gail (Robert) Hibdon, Jefferson City; Jon (Tia) Schnieders, Lenexa, KS; two daughters-in-law, Missy Schnieders and Sharon Schnieders; two step-children, Kathryn Sue Owens, Farmington, MO; Joseph (Maureen) Hooker, Quarryville, PA; 25 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild on the way; 1 great-great grandchild on the way; and one sister, Delores Arps, Worland, WY.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lena Dirkschneider; her two husbands; two sons, Craig and Jeffrey Schnieders; a granddaughter, Rachael Schnieders; three sisters, Violet Baumert, Maureen Miller, Rita Hamilton; two brothers, Roman and Marvin Dirkschneider; and a step-son, Kerry Owens.
