Marie Elizabeth Luebbering, 90, of St. Thomas, passed away Monday, July 20, 2020, at St. Mary’s Hospital.

She was born October 19, 1929, in St. Thomas, the daughter of Thomas Herman and Margaret Ann “Maggie” (Kaiser) Luebbering.

She was a 1947 graduate of St. Peter High School.

Employment Production Credit which later became Farm Credit Services, called St. Peter High School in 1947, looking for a girl with a farm background and suggested Marie from St. Thomas. She started the week after graduation as a clerical worker and rose to Vice-President, retiring in 1986, after thirty-nine years. From 1986-1996, she was the executive secretary to the late Bishop Michael F. McAuliffe and from 1997-1998 to retired Bishop John R. Gaydos. In 2006, she received a Papal award from Pope Benedict XVI.

She was a faithful member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and served as their executive parish secretary for thirty years, Daughters of Isabella, and St. Ann’s Society. She was a member of the Diocese of Jefferson City Deanery. Marie served as bookkeeper for the St. Thomas Baseball Factory for many years.

She enjoyed needlework, flower gardening, and traveling to most of the states, Mexico, and Canada. Her family and faith were the focus of her life.

Survivors include one sister, Delphine Luebbering, St. Thomas, two nephews, Tom (Carol) Backes, St. Thomas; Tim (Karen) Backes, Honey Creek; one niece, Maureen Eggen, St. Thomas; fourteen great-nieces and nephews, Michael Backes, Joseph (Sasha) Eggen, Jim Backes, Christopher Backes, David Eggen, Elizabeth (Robbie) Belew, Teresa Backes, Lucas Eggen, Stephen(Maddie) Backes, Maria (Michael) Cosgrove, Becky Backes, Emily Backes, Paul T. Backes, Matthew Backes; and great-great niece and nephews, Oscar Eggen, Audrey Eggen, Peter Cosgrove, and Joel Dean Backes.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Ben Backes, a niece Jeanine Backes, and a nephew, Jerold Eggen.

Visitation will be 9:30-11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Thomas.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, 2020, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Thomas with the Rev. Leonard Mukiibi officiating. The general public is welcome to attend the services while following social distancing guidelines. Facial coverings are required while in attendance.

Burial will be in St. Thomas Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Cystic Fibrosis.

  3. I remember eating strawberries with Maureen in the kitchen window and roller skating on the front sidewalk. Marie always seemed so well spoken and such a lady. May she have eternal rest.
