Mary Carolyn Speed, 91, of Jefferson City, died Monday, April 6, 2009, at Heisinger Bluffs. She was born on March 20, 1918, in Lepanto, Ark., the daughter of George Earl and Ola Mae Riddell Wise. She was united in marriage on May 26, 1939, in Eupora, Miss., to Willard Eugene Speed, Sr. who preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1999. A teacher all her life she taught second and fourth grade in Lepanto, Ark. Carolyn started the Special Education program for the Warren Ark. school district and later taught special education in Pasco Wash. She was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church, Holts Summit, Alpha Delta Kappa, and Womens Missionary Union. She taught Sunday school and Bible School through the years. Carolyn enjoyed sewing and traveling. Survivors include: one daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and Larry Jones, Jefferson City; five grandchildren, Lori Ann Jones; Dr. Steven (Tamber) Jones; Christie Jones; Russell Speed; Will Speed; and one sister, Anita Cox, Mt. Holly, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Dr. Willard Speed, Jr.; two grandchildren; and two brothers, James Wise and George Wise. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Union Hill Baptist Church, Holts Summit, with Brother E. Frank Whitney officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
