Michael James Peterson Sr.

Michael James Peterson Sr., 79 of Jefferson City passed away Friday, September 4, 2026 at Truman Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia.

He was born March 23, 1947 in St. Louis to the late William and Thelma (Gilnaie) Peterson. Mike grew up in St. Louis and served in the United States Army.  Mike loved being in the kitchen, was certified in the Culinary Arts and was a chef in Five-Star restaurants around the world. His cooking skill also enabled him to give back to communities where he lived by preparing food for various Salvation Armies and food panties.

While living in Nebraska, Mike met Debbie Ewoldt and they were married on November 3, 2000 in Grand Island, Nebraska. After moving to Jefferson City in 2003, Mike provided cleaning services to several Jefferson City businesses.  Whether it was Binder Lake, McKay Park or any of the Missouri trout parks, Mike had a passion for fly fishing.  He was an expert fly tyer and could catch many species of fish on just about any body of water.

Mike is survived by his wife, Debbie of Jefferson City; sister, Sharon Genasec of Florida. He is preceded in death by a brother, Tommy, and a sister, Mary Francis Walleman.
