Michael Hubert Papen, 82, of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024, at Jefferson City Manor Care Center.

He was born June 23, 1941, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Ivan Hubert and Mildred Maxine (Hodges) Papen.

He was a 1959 graduate of California High School.  After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and was medically discharged a short time later.

On June 10, 1961, in California, he was united in marriage to Carmen Blanche Fischer who preceded him in death on December 26, 2020.

Michael began working for Harold Dixon’s Service Station in California before joining the Missouri Department of Transportation as a bridge construction inspector from 1960-1981.   He then worked for the Jefferson City Public Works in the same field, retiring in 2002.

He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Jefferson City.  He served one term on the Jamestown City Council, and volunteered with the Jamestown Volunteer Fire Department serving as Fire Chief for many years.  He was a longtime member of the Jamestown Lion’s Club.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing, golfing, traveling with his wife, being an umpire for Babe Ruth Baseball, and watching college sports especially the MU Tigers.

Survivors include one son, Andy Papen, Jefferson City; one sister, Judy McDonald, Sullivan, MO; one niece, Jennifer (Dave) Schmidt; two nephews, John (April) McDonald, Craig Granger (Jess Cockrum); and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carmen Papen; daughter-in-law, Lois Papen; and brother-in-law, Jim McDonald.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Trimble Funeral Homes – Jefferson City.  A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. with Rev. John Kerr officiating.

Burial will be in Grace United Methodist Cemetery in Jamestown.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Samaritan Center or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
