Nell Louise Hayes, 87, of Jefferson City, died Thursday, March 8, 2007, at St. Marys Health Center. She was born on Jan. 13, 1920, in Fitzhugh, OK, the daughter of John R. and Evelyn Gray Braselton. She was married on Aug. 6, 1942, in Abilene, TX, to Harold Perry Pat Hayes, Jr. who died on Aug. 23, 1967. She attended Mount Saint Scholastica College, Atchison, KS, and graduated from St. Anthonys Hospital School of Nursing, Oklahoma City, OK, in 1941. Mrs. Hayes served in the U.S. Army as a registered nurse from 1943 to 1945. She attained the rank of Second Lieutenant and was assigned to the 124th Evacuation Hospital in the European Theater. Her unit was immediately behind the front lines at the Battle of the Bulge helping the wounded. She lived in Hastings, NE from 1945 to 1986 where she worked for several years at the Hastings State Hospital in Hastings, NE, as a psychiatric nurse until retiring in 1985. She lived in the State of California from 1986 to 2004 when she moved to Jefferson City. She was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Dublene C. Hayes, Jefferson City; and Sandra and Bob Gartner, Lohman, MO; three grandchildren and their spouses, Amy and Dr. Bill Duke, Wardsville, MO; Mike and Jackie Gartner, St. Martins; and Elizabeth Gartner, Chicago; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, John Braselton; and two sisters, Mary Martin and Jolene Braselton. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2007, at St. Martin Catholic Church with the Rev. Edwin A. Schmidt officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in St. Martin Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
