Pauline Clara (Stegeman) Markway, age 99, of Wardsville, MO passed away peacefully at her son’s home in Eugene, Missouri on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, after a long life of serving God, family and community.

Pauline was born on April 16, 1923, in Wardsville, MO.  She is the daughter of Emil and Clara Stegeman.  She attended St. Stanislaus School in Wardsville and St. Peter’s High School in Jefferson City.

She was married on November 22, 1945, to Marcellus Henry Markway in Wardsville, MO and from this union had 10 children.  They are Marcellus, Jr., DVM (Elizabeth) Markway, Mary Beth (Tom) Martz, Dennis, DVM (Pam) Markway, Jude (Mary) Markway, Donna (Wayne) Bernskoetter, Christopher Markway, Emily (Gary) Crawford, Albert, DVM (Debbie) Markway, Rita Paul & John (Lisa) Markway.  There are 32 grandchildren and 73 great grandchildren.

We believe welcoming angels and saints are many, including sisters, Lucille and Viola; Marcellus, her husband; a son, Chris; daughter Mary Beth; and 2 grandsons, Gabriel and Michael Rieke.

She partnered with Marcellus as the bookkeeper and architect for their Marcellus Markway Construction business.  She loved 4-H and served as an officer and taught many sewing classes, and also served as an officer in the PTA.  She would cook any wild animal that her sons would bring home after a day of hunting!

Pauline was a member of the St. Stanislaus Sodality of Our Lady.  When she served as Chairperson for the St. Stanislaus Centennial celebration in 1980, Pauline created a large cake church replica and painted a large mural of the Risen Christ for the event.  In 1986 she started the Adoration chapel in St. Stanislaus Church with the blessing of Fr. Brendan Doyle, and took a daily 3-4 a.m. hour until she was 85 years old.  She continued taking a weekly hour and was a regular substitute until she was in her 90’s.  The Perpetual Adoration chapel is still going strong.

Pauline was on the Board of Directors of a Halfway House in Columbia, MO, and was a Positive Mental Attitude volunteer for the Missouri State Penitentiary for over 20 years.  She was active in the Cursillo movement and the Pro-Life cause.

She was an artist in every sense of the word: paintings and murals, decorating elaborate wedding cakes and Christmas cookies, sewing wedding and bridesmaids’ dresses, clothes for herself and family, slipcovers, curtains and more.  She loved designing and creating handmade Priest stoles and church banners.  Pauline designed and created thousands of Christmas ornaments from Christmas cards, embellishing them with trim, beads and often jewelry brought home by Marcellus from garage sales.  She loved to sing and loved dancing with her beloved husband.  She loved gardening, growing all kinds of fruits and vegetables, fruit trees, flowers and flowering bushes.  She also wrote poems and stories all in her spare time while raising ten children.  The above just scratches the surface.  She was an amazing and humble lady with a beautiful heart.

Visitation will be Saturday, December 10th from 9-11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wardsville.  A rosary will be recited at 8:30 a.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. with Reverend Monsignor David Cox, as celebrant.

Entombment will be in St Stanislaus Mausoleum.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Stanislaus EDUCATION FOUNDATION, 6410 Route W, Jefferson City, MO 65101; Samaritan Center, 1310 East McCarty Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101, or to the Carmelite Monastery, 31970 State Highway P, Clyde, MO 64432.

  3. Pauline was our mom’s (Marie Bruemmer Bruns) dear friend and Wardsville classmate. She spoke of her so often, and she had a great deal of love and admiration for Pauline. What a long, fulfilling and inspirational life she had! Condolences to the whole family.

  4. Our deepest sympathies in your loss of such a special lady. Pauline was truly an inspiration in the quiet, unassuming way she lived her life and her faith. Her love lives on in her beautiful children and family.
