Velma Rose Leary
July 25, 1925 ~ January 14, 2022
She was born July 25, 1925, in Jefferson City, the daughter of Frederick William and Clara (Sailer) Vogel.
Velma was a 1943 graduate of St. Peter Catholic School.
She was united in marriage on April 14, 1951, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City to John Patrick “Pat” Leary who preceded her in death on November 17, 1977.
Velma worked as a typist, secretary, and bookkeeper for United Mutual Insurance Company, a company founded by her father, and the Missouri Oil Council.
She was a charter member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph where she participated in the prayer line and the St. Joseph Women’s Association, member and later a Board member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, member of Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, and a charter member of the Meadow Lake Acres Country Club. Velma was a founding member and active participant of the Perpetual Adoration at the Cathedral until failing health. She volunteered with the Meals on Wheels Program and volunteered at the Diocese of Jefferson City Chancery and Catholic Charities.
She is survived by: many nieces and nephews, Mary Ann Vogel (Dick) Hyleck, Dorlene Vogel (Charles) Prather, Jane Vogel Long, Carole Vogel Leslie, Susie Vogel, Sally Vogel (Sam) Schnieders, Tom (Lois) Vogel, Dorothy Vogel (Jerry) Ripplinger, Joanne Vogel, Don (Mary) Vogel, Michael (Linda) Vogel, Claranne Vogel (Michael Moyer), Sharon Ovaitt, Frank (Jackie) Ovaitt, Larry Ovaitt, Paul (Denise) Ovaitt, Douglas Ovaitt, Mark (Kathryn) Ovaitt, Dan (Vonda) Ovaitt, Jerry (Elizabeth) Vogel, Rick (Susan) Vogel, Lisa Vogel (Denny) Galati, Joan Vogel (Bob) Kruger, Marie Vogel Kohrmann; and many, many more great and great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Pat’s family, Celeste Leary Klebba.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pat Leary; brothers and sisters, Fred Vogel, Cornelia Vogel, Arthur Vogel, Gerald Vogel, Mildred Vogel Ovaitt, Dorothy Vogel, Sister Claranne Vogel, SSND, Jerome Vogel; two nephews, Art Vogel, Jr, and David Vogel; a niece, Ruth Ovaitt; and Jean Leary Waldron and Jane Leary Riley.
Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at St. Peter Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Louis Nelen officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Catholic Mausoleum.
